Sønderborg Airport Sees Overall Passenger Growth of 31 Percent Since 2023

Sønderborg Airport continues its positive development. In 2025, passenger numbers increased by 11 percent, bringing total growth since 2023 to an impressive 31 percent. This makes Sønderborg Airport the Danish airport with the highest percentage growth in passenger traffic over the past two years.

In 2025, a total of 64,521 passengers travelled through the airport – a significant increase compared to 58,142 in 2024. December also showed progress, with a 6.5 percent rise compared to December 2024.

“The growth is primarily driven by increased passenger traffic between Sønderborg and Copenhagen, more charter travellers, and a rise in the number of passengers from Northern Germany,” says Jákup Sverri Kass, CEO of Sønderborg Airport.

A key driver behind the growth is the stable flight connections to Copenhagen. Sønderborg Airport now offers departures every day of the week. On weekdays, up to four daily flights are operated, and during weekends, there are one to two daily departures. This high frequency is vital for businesses, tourism and private travelers in the region.

At the same time, the airport clearly feels the momentum of Sønderborg and Southern Denmark. Both business activity and leisure offerings in the area are increasing.

“It is no secret that investments in tourism development, the opening of the Center Parcs Nordborg Resort, and rising numbers for business travelers have all contributed to our growth,” the CEO adds.

Although 2026 is expected to be more challenging due to fewer direct charter departures, the airport remains optimistic about domestic traffic. With strengthened connections out of Copenhagen and a rising number of Jutland travelers using Copenhagen Airport as a hub, passenger numbers on the Sønderborg–Copenhagen route are expected to continue growing.

Parallel to the traffic development, Sønderborg Airport is carrying out a comprehensive modernization of its infrastructure. One of the major projects is the establishment of the first digital control tower in the Danish Realm, expected to be operational in February.

“Together with SAAB and Danish suppliers, we are very much looking forward to transitioning from our traditional tower to a state‑of‑the‑art digital tower. The Danish Transport Authority has been an important partner throughout the process, and we look forward to the official opening,” concludes Jákup Sverri Kass.
